FREDERICTON (GNB) – Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Serge Rousselle issued the following statement today to mark National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 19-25, and to emphasize the importance of safe driving in the vicinity of schools and school buses:

Student safety is a priority for our government, and that includes their safe transportation to and from schools. However, when it comes to ensuring our children’s safety during the school year, every motorist has a key role to play.

It’s important for all drivers to bear in mind that students, especially very young schoolchildren, are counting on them to yield both at crosswalks and when school buses have stopped to allow passengers to embark and disembark.

This National School Bus Safety Week is a timely occasion for all drivers to reflect upon the need to be extra-vigilant for schoolchildren and school buses in every community.

I urge all New Brunswickers to help keep our children safe by always following school zone speed limits, exercising extra caution in school zones, and watching at all times for children on the road and on sidewalks, as well as for school buses. Remember, it is illegal and dangerous to pass a school bus while its lights are flashing, as children might be crossing the road. Every motorist must stop his or her vehicle when the red lights on a school bus are flashing and must remain stopped until they stop flashing.

Through patience, vigilance and caution, everyone can make a difference in the continuing effort to keep our children and schools safe, and I ask that all New Brunswick motorists do so throughout the year.
